Burr -I'm freezing -it's Saturday on Godwit day and those poor birding people must be frozen . I want to go out and plant something but it"s pouring . I just heard some great news on the radio -the seal hunting boats in Canada are stranded on the ice -yeahhhhhhhhh. I hope they all get what they deserve -time to think about their karma ? How can someone be that heartless to club a baby seal to death -it's unfathomable . Anyway I have my first restaurant review today --3 Foods Restaurant -behind the coop in Arcata . I will be reviewing only the vegetarian items on menus in various restaurants ,as I won't be tasting the meat sections . I started with the salad (it's organic ) ,a lovely melange of baby greens ,toasted walnuts ,feta and olive oil with balsamic vinegar . The flavors melded in a wonderful fashion with a local chardonnay . My husband (an omnivore despite all my efforts at brainwashing ,and making a huge fuss when he cooks his dead bird --I don't know how he puts up with me ) had the vegetarian appetizer of three different chutneys with an Indian theme -- mango ,yoghurt and spiced garbanzo beans scooped up with warm Indian bread called nan . I tried them all and the flavors blended together wonderfully . I then had the potato patties ( I'm from Scotland so I could live on potatoes ) which had a little too much cumin predominating, topped with garbanzo beans . The beans helped with the overwhelming cumin .I ordered a side of veg to go with that which was pretty good -could have been cooked a little longer . We then ordered the tiramisu which we split - wow -it was stunning . Another thing to mention was the wonderful lavender lemonade which my husband had (hey - I need a designated driver after having 3 glasses of wine). The best thing is that you can get a smaller portion if you want ,something that is a great thing at Mazotti's also. If someone puts a large plate of something in front of me in a restaurant -I WILL EAT IT !!!!!!!!! So overall it is a really nice place and relatively cheap compared to other gourmet places -our bill came to less than $50 (including my 3 glasses of wine ) . GET OUT AND PLANT SOMETHING AS SOON AS YOU CAN . It's April and I'm eating broccoli ,cauliflower ,lettuce ,green onions ,radish ,cabbage and chard (planted in November ) from my greenhouse . Outside I have leeks , asparagas and rhubarb . I have boysenberries ,blackberries ,blueberries ,strawberries ,tayberries ,marionberries and black raspberries flowering along with all my fruit trees. Did you know that 1 spear of asparagus weighing 16 grams has 3 calories !!!! 15 grams are water .
